In the 17th and 18th century Minas Gerais became the economic center of the colony, with a rapid settlement. In 1709, they created the Captaincy of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro, separated from the Province of the Espírito Santo. In 1720, the Captaincy of Minas Gerais was separated from the Captaincy of São Paulo, with its capital Vila Rica (Ouro Preto today).

HOW TO GET THERE

You can reach Ouro Preto by car. If you go by plane you'll land in Confins airport in Belo Horizonte (the state capital). There you can rent a car or take a coach.
If you go by car you can get BR-040 or Fernão Dias highway. It takes 8 hours and 40 minutes from São Paulo.
