In the 17th and 18th century Minas Gerais became the economic center of the colony, with a rapid settlement. In 1709, they created the Captaincy of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro, separated from the Province of the Espírito Santo. In 1720, the Captaincy of Minas Gerais was separated from the Captaincy of São Paulo, with its capital Vila Rica (Ouro Preto today).

WHAT TO SEE

Mina of Chico Rei
Church Matriz de Tiradentes
There is pleny  to see in Ouro Preto, Mariana and Tiradentes such as many churches and mines. The churches worth seeing are:  “Matriz de Tiradentes”, “Bom Jesus de Matosinho”, “Sao Francisco”. The mines: “Chico Rei” and “Mina da Vale” are interesting. You can´t miss “Casa dos Contos” with a touristic guide tour about the history of the place and with a visit to the room where the slaves used to be kept, equipped with the materials of torture used at that time. It´s a place that brings back all the suffering of such slaves.
