In the 17th and 18th century Minas Gerais became the economic center of the colony, with a rapid settlement. In 1709, they created the Captaincy of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro, separated from the Province of the Espírito Santo. In 1720, the Captaincy of Minas Gerais was separated from the Captaincy of São Paulo, with its capital Vila Rica (Ouro Preto today).

TIPS

 If you want to enjoy everything in the historical cities we recommend you to spend at least  a week in the region. The steep streets are sometimes tiresome and you should stop and rest for a while during your walk.
